Helping create resilient communities

FMIA has one goal; to be the driver of change by serving as the collective voice for flood mitigation. Through advocacy, education and support, FMIA strives to safeguard our country’s homes, commercial buildings, and critical infrastructure.

Support our advocacy efforts to shape smarter policies and protect communities nationwide.

Leading the Flood Mitigation Industry

FMIA is the nonprofit industry association uniting multiple sectors of flood hazard mitigation — from dry floodproofing and structural elevation to nature-based solutions. Based on the Gulf Coast and shaped by decades of real-world experience across tens of thousands of structural elevation and floodproofing projects, FMIA brings together contractors, engineers, insurers, and policymakers under one collective voice.

Our mission goes beyond recovery. We educate communities on the steps they can take before disaster strikes — protecting families, lowering flood insurance rates, and preserving asset value. According to the National Institute of Building Sciences, every $1 invested in flood resilience saves $6 in disaster recovery costs. FMIA exists to make that investment accessible, scalable, and workforce-ready.

Building Economic Resilience, One Community at a Time

Flood mitigation creates a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond water control. When communities invest in flood protection, they’re investing in economic growth, job creation, and long-term financial stability. Our industry drives innovation while creating skilled labor opportunities that strengthen local economies and provide meaningful careers in resilience-building work.

The numbers tell a powerful story: every dollar spent on flood mitigation saves communities six dollars in future recovery costs. But the true impact goes deeper — we’re empowering individuals and businesses with the knowledge, resources, and solutions they need to build safer environments. From reduced insurance premiums to protected critical infrastructure, flood mitigation transforms vulnerable communities into resilient ones that can weather any storm.

Our Industry

Building the Workforce to Protect Communities

Flooding is becoming more frequent and severe, leaving families to face years of recovery—or the difficult choice to relocate entirely. Many who rebuild find themselves starting over again when the next flood arrives, sometimes within just a few years.

The solution exists: proven mitigation techniques can protect homes and businesses before disaster strikes. But communities need trained professionals who can deliver these solutions.

The Flood Mitigation Industry Association builds awareness of flood mitigation options while developing the skilled workforce needed to implement them. Through industry training and standards, we’re preparing contractors, engineers, and construction professionals to help cities, businesses, and homeowners take action—whether recovering from damage or preparing proactively for inevitable future flooding.

Why wait for the next disaster? Let’s build flood-resilient communities together.
