Testing & Certification
Backed by scientific research and rigorous laboratory testing, FM Approvals certifies flood mitigation products that protect commercial and industrial facilities from flood damage.
Standards That Drive Innovation
In alignment with FMIA's mission to protect against the devastation and long-term hardships caused by flooding, FM Approvals partnered with the Association of State Floodplain Managers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to operate the Flood Mitigation Certification Program—a catalyst for the development of better flood-fighting and early warning products.
Backed by scientific research, FM Approvals objectively tests and certifies flood mitigation products for the protection of commercial and industrial facilities. Testing and certification evaluates performance against different flooding conditions, measures resistance to common environmental concerns, and assesses component parts.
FM Approvals tests to requirements outlined by ANSI/FM 2510 (American National Standard for Flood Mitigation Equipment) and FM 2505 (Examination Standard for Early Warning Flood Sensor Systems).
What the Certification Mark Means
A product that bears the FM Approvals certification mark for ANSI/FM 2510 or FM 2505 has met three critical benchmarks of quality and reliability.
Has Completed Laboratory Repeatable Testing
Meets or Exceeds Rigorous Requirements
Is Subject to Facility Audits
Products Evaluated to ANSI/FM 2510
The American National Standard for Flood Mitigation Equipment covers a comprehensive range of products designed to keep floodwaters out of protected facilities.
Opening Barriers
Can be installed permanently—such as flood doors, automatic pop-up barriers, hinged or sliding gates—or as temporary installations including flood logs, drop-in panels, door and window covers, and sidewalk grate covers.
Perimeter Barriers
Intended as temporary installations to either encircle a protected facility completely or to shield large portions of the facility from rising floodwaters during an event.
Flood Mitigation Pumps
Used as temporary or permanently installed protection from unwanted water entering a facility. Sump pumps and self-priming pumps are most commonly used in this application.
Flood Mitigation Valves
Permanently installed in facility drain lines to prevent flood water from entering a facility through reverse flow during a flooding event.
Flood Glazing
Permanently installed to allow building users to continue to enjoy natural light and views while remaining protected against flooding events.
Wall Penetration Seals
Permanently installed to seal unused holes or the space around wires, cables, or pipes that pass through building walls—closing off common entry points for floodwater.
Early Warning Flood Sensors
Evaluated to the requirements of FM 2505. Combine sensor and communication technologies to provide early, reliable, user-defined alerts, warnings, and alarms about rising water levels—helping at-risk businesses proactively initiate flood mitigation protocols.
Two Industry Standards
ANSI/FM 2510 covers physical flood mitigation equipment, while FM 2505 covers early warning sensor systems—together creating a comprehensive certification framework that addresses both prevention and preparedness.
FM Approvals' Certification Process
If your organization manufactures flood mitigation or related products and is interested in certification, the process begins with submitting an Application for New Products and reviewing the FM Approvals Certification Process documentation.
FM Approvals will work directly with you to evaluate your product and determine whether it is suitable to earn the FM Approvals certification mark. The process is designed to validate product performance objectively, giving end users confidence in the equipment they install.
